Documenting a Draft
NaismithLives.com writer Todd Kapostasy gives a detailed account of the NBA Draft. A self-admitted lover of the NBA but not college basketball, Todd gives an interesting perspective to his draft day viewing...
Even though I consider myself a huge NBA fan, every time the draft rolls around I find myself uninterested. I think it might be the speculation. The mock drafts, the trade rumors - why not just wait until it actually happens? So that's usually what I do. Wait. I dial up the draft board on ESPN.com the following day and that's it. Don't get me wrong, if I find myself in front of the TV I'll watch the first five or 10 picks then maybe flip back when my team is on the clock. But generally speaking, draft day doesn't get my blood rushing.
But because of my aforementioned love of hoops, I really feel bad about my lack of draft enthusiasm. So this year I set out to change it. I have decided to devote two solid hours to the 2009 NBA Draft. That should be enough time to get through most of the first round.
To make sure my attention doesn’t wonder (and as proof I actually watched it), I have decided to write a short diary of my two hour draft viewing experiment.
Let’s go…
07:30:00 ESPN's coverage of the draft begins. I spend the next four minutes trying to figure out military time. It's more confusing than you think...
07:31:00 I realize I'm going to be hearing "It's My Time" by Fabolous all night. Not terribly excited about it.
19:37:00 I have an internal debate about whether I should admit to readers that this military time is actually my DVR time. My Ruby Tuesday's server was extremely slow and couldn't get to my TV until 7:45.
19:39:30 Blake Griffin is selected by the Clippers with the 1st overall pick. BOR-ING. The pick, not Griffin... oh wait...
19:41:00 Blake Griffin chats with Mark Jones. He makes Tim Duncan seem vivacious.
19:46:00 David Stern's voice cracks twice as he announces Hasheem Thabeet as the 2nd overall pick to the Grizzlies. Hopefully Thabeet is neither a bust nor an all-time great. Stern doesn't want that on his public speaking resume.
19:52:00 Thunder with the somewhat surprising pick of James Harden at three. Luckily Joan Rivers isn't in the house to critique Harden's wardrobe choice. Normally I'm pro bow-tie, but Harden is lookin' a little too Fonzworth Bentley for me.
19:54:00 James Humble hits the side set with Mark Jones. Speaks about how he had a last minute, late night workout with the Timberwolves, but says, “Oklahoma City loved me more."
19:57:00 Tyreke Evans is selected by Kings with the fourth pick.
19:57:15 Ricky Rubio is shown awkwardly clapping for the fourth time.
19:59:00 Jay Bilas claims Tyreke Evans isn't a great shooter, but "thinks he will improve." Got me thinking. Would Jay Bilas ever say, "'So-n'-So' isn't a great shooter, and I don't think he will ever improve."
20:03:00 Stuart Scott says if the Timberwolves select Ricky Rubio he will be the first player taken in an NBA draft born in the 1990's. For some reason I get really depressed. I'm getting old. I go to the fridge and grab a cold one.
20:03:30 The Timberwolves select Ricky Rubio as the fifth pick. I crack my beer.
20:06:00 Ricky Rubio calls Mark Jones "man" on the side set. Love it.
20:07:00 Jay Bilas says that Ricky Rubio looks like he should be playing "at court seven at Wimbledon." Does Wimbledon actually have seven courts, I wonder? After a quick Wikipedia search I discover there are actually nineteen rye grass courts utilized at Wimbledon. Touché Mr. Bilas.
20:07:30 I hit the "LIVE" button on my DVR remote to try to get back into real-time.
20:10:30 I realize I went ahead too far and missed a pick. I rewind.
20:10:00 Jonny Flynn is picked sixth by the Timberwolves.
20:10:00 ESPN shows the Timberwolves "draft room" when the pick is announced. They react, clap, and look at each other. This makes me wonder - didn't they make the decision? Why are they acting surprised?
20:12:00 ESPN shows highlights of Flynn playing in the six overtime game against UCONN. Makes you wonder - if Flynn didn't play those 67 minutes would he have been drafted as high? Personally I don't think so.
20:13:00 Flynn talks with Mark Jones: talks in the 3rd person, proclaims he is "tough as nails" and generally seems overconfident and arrogant. Not sure why, but I kinda like him.
20:15:00 Jamal Crawford traded. My response: "..."
20:15:30 The Warriors select Stephen Curry at number seven to Knick boos. Pretty sure those same fans would have booed if the Knicks had selected Stephen Curry.
20:19:00 Lisa Saulters interviews Dell Curry on his 45th birthday. All I can do is stare at his wife in the background.
20:21:00 Knicks eighth pick. Select Jordan Hill.
20:21:05 Five seconds later I realize Jordan Hill will not survive in New York.
20:23:00 Really getting sick of the Fabolous tune.
20:27:00 I miss the Raptors selecting DeMar DeRozan 9th as I read Michael Jackson's Obit on CNN.com. RIP King of Pop.
20:29:00 I love Mark Jones, but he ends the interview with DeRozan with a tidbit about the great public transportation in Toronto. What?
20:32:55 I start to grow tired of the little ringtone ditty ESPN plays before Stern announces a pick.
20:33:00 The Milwaukee Bucks select Brandon Jennings 10th. He's apparently not in attendance because he didn't receive a guarantee that he'd be selected in the first round. Coward.
20:34:00 Fran Frachilla claims the Jennings experiment worked. Disagree. If Jennings would have signed with Arizona and played there there's no way Flynn or Curry goes ahead of him.
20:38:00 Terrence Williams becomes the 11th pick of the New Jersey Nets. He is the first senior selected. Claims he doesn’t watch ESPN.
20:40:00 Jay Bilas, Stuart Scott and Terrence Williams have an awkward exchange about Williams not watching ESPN. I nearly change the channel.
20:41:00 I check in on NaismithLives.com’s Live Draft chat and have a few picks ruined for me. I crack another Busch Light.
20:45:00 The Charlotte Bobcats select Gerald Henderson. Henderson Sr. says he thought Jr. was going to be a golfer. John Barry is already blowing up his cell.
20:50:00 Tyler Hansbrough is taken by the Pacers. Kinda cliche, but the crowd chants "overrated"? How so? He put up insane numbers and then wasn't even selected in the top 10 of a mediocre draft.
20:52:00 Mark Jackson backs me up and says the crowd is foolish for the chant.
20:55:00 David Stern announces Earl Clark is selected 14th by the Suns.
20:55:15 AWK-WARRRD. So Earl Clark isn't in the house, but Brandon Jennings, now, is. Jennings emerges waving his hands at the crowd. No offense Brandon, but if you were scared about the possibility of being left in the green room as pick after pick passed you by, you then can't come out later when you’re selected in the top 10. Can't have your cake and eat it too buster.
20:58:00 Interesting. Jennings misinterprets a question asked by Mark Jones. Jones basically asks if Brandon thinks he has set a trend with his decision to play overseas (implying it worked out for him). Jennings claims it was STILL a great experience. Still. Meaning: I think I would have gone higher had I gone to college in the U.S. I agree.
20:59:00 After the fourth commercial I FINALLY remember I can fast forward through breaks.
21:01:00 Austin Daye is taken 15th by the Pistons. He's the third player taken whose father played in the NBA.
21:01:15 I call pops and apologize for my lack of success. He apologizes for not paving the way.
21:05:00 Dicky V is brought in for thoughts. It’s a sorta subdued Vitale. Stanco makes a great point here: "I love that Vitale hasn't accepted that great players can play one year in college or play overseas. Its almost sad."
21:12:00 The 76ers pick up Jrue Holiday at 17. He's the last dude in the green room. Eat it Brandon Jennings. It'll only make me stronger.
21:18:00 Ty Lawson is taken 18th by Minnesota. Third point guard picked by Timberwolves. What the? The T-Wolves starting to look like my intramural squad. Rubio = Adam Stanco, Johnny Flynn = Me, Ty Lawson = Greg Pike
21:21:00 Ric Bucher says Lawson's not staying. Cool, I got no problem trading Pike.
21:23:00 Jeff Teague picked 19th by the Hawks. Getting a little bored. Crack my third. My two hour mark is approaching.
21:27:00 Jazz select Eric Maynor at 20. My gut reaction is to say, "that's a great fit." But I don't really even know what that means.
21:29:00 Stuart Scott announces they will be speaking live with Shaquille O'Neal about his trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers. I reluctantly decide to extend my two hour window to check it out.
21:33:00 I realize that Adam Silver will be taking over for Stern in the 2nd round. Got me thinking. Silver is kinda like the Farrah Fawcet of the NBA Draft. Unfairly overshadowed.
21:41:00 Shaq is finally on the phone. He says he'll be playing with "one of the greatest players ever to play the game." Interesting. He ever call D-Wade that? He also says he'd come off the bench if he had to, but "can't see that happening." This definitely creates an awkward situation with Big Z. People in Cleveland LOVE Zydrunas Ilgauskas, so to see him coming off the bench would be sad. And it begs the question: is Shaq actually a better center than Z?
21:45:00 Omri Casspi is taken by the Kings. Tel Aviv loves it! If I were Jewish this would be an incredible place to say "Shalom!" and end the diary. Unfortunately it's not so.
21:45:10 Decide to hop back to NaismithLives.com's Live Draft chat for some legitimate draft analysis.

Bad move.
We'd be in big trouble without Pike.
