2009 NBA Draft: What We Know About the Top Four

The 2009 NBA Draft is just days away. This is what we’ve seen, what we know, or what we’re hearing about the top of the draft …

Since Blake Griffin’s draft destination appears to be locked up – first overall to the Los Angeles Clippers if you’ve been hanging out underground with those folks from Geico – he decided to take in a leisurely activity on Monday. Griffin was on ESPN’s Bristol campus shooting an online segment for ESPN.com called “The Rookie.” The NaismithLives.com Player of the Year stepped onto the basketball court to take some pictures and chat up ESPN.com writer Andy Katz (as seen here). Griffin even interrupted a summer league game being played by NaismithLives.com senior writer Adam Stanco and contributing writer – and rising star amongst the scribes – Todd Kapostasy. You can see all three of here.

The Memphis Grizzlies might miss out on their top two draft and could ultimately be forced to trade the second overall pick. Point guard Ricky Rubio would fit perfectly alongside last year’s rookie sensation O.J. Mayo and the 18-year old reportedly wouldn’t mind playing in a small U.S. market because his exposure is international anyhow. However, Rubio has certainly spoken to fellow Spanish National teamers Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro about their unhappy experiences in Memphis.

The other obvious choice for the Grizz is former Connecticut center Hasheem Thabeet, but he pulled out of a private workout with the Grizzlies on Monday. The NaismithLives.com Defensive Player of the Year blamed the cancellation on a shoulder injury, but even Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace knows there might be other motives. “It’s also what goes this time of the year with guys showing, not showing, that type of thing,” said Wallace. “The gamesmanship of the draft.”

Read between the lines and it appears obvious that Thabeet doesn’t want to play in Memphis either.

If Memphis selects Thabeet, they might be looking at a disgruntled center who they didn’t get to see workout. Should they pick Rubio, he could simply decide not to come across the Atlantic at all. Expect them to ultimately trade the pick or maybe go with another prospect with star potential, Arizona State’s James Harden.

League insiders had been scratching their heads in regards to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the third overall pick, but they may have found some clarity on Saturday. Thunder general manager Sam Presti reportedly flew to Los Angeles to personally meet with Rubio. ESPN.com’s Chad Ford says they are also high on Davidson’s Stephen Curry. It might just come down to which player Presti feels will mesh best with Russell Westbrook.

The Sacramento Kings will be selecting a point guard with the fourth pick, but even if Rubio slides to they still will likely pass on him. Rubio pulled out of an earlier workout with the Sacramento Kings claiming he was “ill,” yet it could probably be chalked up to “gamesmanship” as well. The Kings did work out some of the other elite point guards on Sunday, bringing in Tyreke Evans (Memphis), Jonny Flynn (Syracuse), Patty Mills (St. Mary’s), and Curry. Prep star-turned-European Brandon Jennings and UCLA’s Jrue Holiday are also in that class, but since they didn’t attend the workout, expect one of the aforementioned lead guards to become a King on Thursday.
